Month: April 2017
I used to start sneezing, sniffling and asthma through mildew and mold exposure (although my personal allergies also included dust, pollen, and pets). Shots in the allergist and medicines were the weekly program. I began to test out home air cleaners and atmosphere cleaners of all kinds at age Eleven. When hypersensitive to mildew you will attempt anything for relief.
30 years of experience has given me a large amount of knowledge about air purifiers and mildew problems. The next paragraphs represent the primary kinds of air refinement, with a quick rating on their effectiveness for mildew and mold allergy symptoms.
Luckily, I reached out to my friends at Eco Pro Restoration. They are mold remediation professionals local to us here. They were able to explain the specific differences between the various types of air purifiers, and what works best.
An electrostatic device is actually a machine with good and adversely charged dishes. Oreck may call these dishes “Truman Cell” (maybe it stands for Harry Truman??) but they’re most often known as “ionic” or “electrostatic”. Works for air pollution since carbon from car wear out is billed, and they are washable but since most pollen and dust bears little cost however they are not effective for pollen or dust or mold
FOR MOLD & MILDEW Allergic reactions: RATED Bad
The 1st option for allergy symptoms such as pollen and dust HEPA traps and holds pollen and dirt. Allergists recommend this most. The down-side = you have to replace it every year or so. It will get rid of mold spores to reduce the spread of mold but will not kill mold or mildew. If you consist of HEPA discover affordable replacement filters because some businesses can soak you once you own their Hepa air cleaner. Avoid the costly air purifiers like IQAIR (and Austin Air that are primarily HEPA and end up forgetting about them for mold and mildew. They are over-priced for a Hepa filtration system, although they are well made you can find better mildew home air cleaners for under $300.
MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED FAIR (eliminates mold spores)
Ozone Producing Air Purifier Machines
Ozone, which is isimply Oxygen by having an added particle of oxygen (o3), works best for odor, mold, and mildew, but is not good for gathering pollen and dust. Too much ozone will irritate the lungs, especially in asthma sufferers. Ozone machines did little for allergies. Today’s primary Ozone brand is Ecoquest (formerly Alpine).
Mildew & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED Superb FOR Mildew and mold REMOVAL, However DANGEROUS TO LUNGS.
Ionizers Home air cleaners
Ionizers put negative ions into the atmosphere. Will kill some forms of mildew, pollution, and odor, but not excellent for plant pollen or dust while there is absolutely nothing to collect the actual pollen up. MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED FAIR
Carbon and/or Zeolite
Primarily with regard to smoke, chemicals, odors and fumes as these organic minerals absorb as well as trap gas. Not efficient by any means for mold or mildew. But they don’t trap dirt and plant pollen.
MOLD & MILDEW ALLERGIES: Ranked POOR
Ultraviolet (UV) Home air cleaners
UV (ultraviolet light) as well as Tio2 ( Titanium dioxide – nanotechnology) are utilized by hospitals and dental practitioners because they kill bacteria, germs, and mold/mildew. UV light has a frequency which kills micro-organisms and hence is effective for mold, while Tio2 magnifies UV illuminate to 1000 times Mildew & MILDEW ALLERGIES: RATED EXCELLENT AND SAFE.
So: Should You Buy A “UV ONLY” Air cleaner?
I would avoid UV just electronic home air cleaners and get a combination of Ultra violet, Tio2, HEPA and Ion. That’s because you’ll find numerous air purifiers for $200-300 using a mixture of these technologies to do a highly effective job on mold and mildew, plus clean the air completely.

Depending on where you are, the winter months can be quite cold. Taking the time to do some work around the home ahead of time or before it gets too cold can make all the difference in the world, especially when it can help prevent water damage. What’s great is that the majority of these maintenance jobs can be performed by the homeowner. Unfortunately, many homeowners may not know where to begin; hopefully these tips will help.
Winter Home Maintenance Tips
1. For outdoor furniture, it’s important to clean any and all parts, including the cushions. If there is rust damage, it should be repaired. It is highly recommended that outdoor furniture be stored indoors for the winter. However, if furniture can’t be stored, cover furniture and allow for airflow so now mold/mildew can form.
2. Fireplaces should be professionally inspected and cleaned. This should be done at least once a year as it helps to prevent chimney fires.
3. Check for air leaks around windows and doors. One of the easiest ways to check, is by moving a lighter around the window or door frame to see if the flame begins to move or flicker from a breeze. It can be repaired with caulking or by replacing the wood frame. A plastic sealing kit can also be purchased at home improvement store. Doors can usually be easily fixed with a simple door sweep.
4. Proper insulation is a must in both your attic and basement. When inspecting your insulation, keep an eye out for any dark, dirty spots as they may indicate possible air leaks.
5. Drain gas from your gasoline powered equipment for the winter so that it can be stored away.
6. Start early and keep plenty of wood cut and stacked for burning during the winter months. Keep a smaller stack closer to your home for quick access.
7. If you store a gas powered generator for emergencies, be sure to have containers of gas stored away for the generator. Gasoline should be stored in either a garage or in an outside storage unit. Make sure your generator is in working order.
8. Double check snow shovels and snow blower are in good shape. Waiting until a snow storm to buy one, it’s likely store will be sold out.
9. Regardless of how you heat your home, it’s important to have your heating unit inspected to ensure that it is working properly.
By taking the time to perform these routine home maintenance steps, you can prevent problems not only during these cold months but can also prevent water damage in the future. For more information on ways to prevent water damage, visit the mold remediation experts at Able Restoration.
